HISTORY OF THE ROAD BUILDERS’
ASSOCIATION OF NEW BRUNSWICK INC.
In the mid-fifties with the construction industry growing,
contractors started to realize they needed an association
to air their views and problems as a body to the Minister.
To form the association took real effort. A lot of meetings
and discussions – a small group of contractors undertook
the task of forming the organization. Approval of the Minister
of Public Works as the Department of Transportation was known
at that time was required. J. Stewart Brooks was Minister.
A lot of thought was given to methods of approach to the Minister.
It is interesting to note that in a newspaper interview with
Mr. Brooks in 1986, he recalled the meeting with this group
and he remarked that “they thought I’d oppose
the idea” – other associations such as this had
met with resistance in other provinces. He said, “that
rather than oppose, he supported the idea of an association
because he would rather address an association than individual
contractors, and the contractors would have more strength
combined than on an individual basis”.
INCORPORATION
Incorporation was in September 1958 with Art Ormiston of
Rayner Construction as President, Val Dexter of Dexter Construction,
Roscoe Snodgrass of Diamond Construction, Doug Brewer of Planet
Construction and Jack Esson of M.F. Esson & Sons as Directors.
Ashley A. Colter – CEO of Diamond was appointed Honourary
President and remained in this position until his death in
1977.
Our first Annual Meeting was November 20, 1958. There were
18 firms represented, 29 persons present. Of the 24 contractor
members at that time, only four remain. At that meeting Winston
Steeves of Modern Construction and Len Phillips of Phillips
Construction were elected as Directors for year 1959.
In 1960, W.J. Lawson was hired as Secretary/Manager. Civil
Engineering Scholarships were first established this year.
The Annual Meeting on January 9, 1963 indicated great interest
shown toward having public openings of tenders.
The Annual Meeting on February 3, 1965 had Louis J. Robichaud,
Premier of New Brunswick as guest speaker and public tender
openings announced - a major milestone in our history and
one that took an enormous amount of work and effort by our
directors.
At the Annual Meeting, January 11, 1967, W.J. Lawson retired
and Don Forbes was hired as Secretary/Manager.
At the Annual Meeting of January 8, 1974, ongoing meetings
were set up between D.O.T. and RBANB. A very worthy decision
and these meetings are still ongoing.
At the Annual meeting, January 11, 1984, Don Forbes retired
after 17 years of faithful service and Past President Jim
Hoyt was appointed Secretary/Manager.
At our Annual Meeting on January 9, 1996, Jim Hoyt retired
and was appointed Honourary President, a post that he held
until his death in 2003.
Jim Hughson, former owner of Valley Oxygen Ltd., past RBANB
Director and retired businessman was appointed Secretary/Manager
on January 9th, 1996.
Organization problems and growing pains ensued during these
years. However, the Association survived and prospered. Today
our membership consists of 52 contractors and 100 suppliers
of equipment, material and services from all regions with
the Province.
Today our Association is the major voice of the Heavy Construction
Industry in the Province.
The majority of our members are privately owned, small to
medium sized companies. Our members have been truly entrepreneurial
in their development and the substantial investment of our
member firms in equipment, buildings and people within the
Province is well known.
It is interesting to note that unlike many other organizations,
our President and Board of Directors are elected by ballot
– they are not appointed. They receive no remuneration.
The President serves a one-year term and Directors serve a
three-year term.
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Annual Meeting
on January 15, 1960 saw the establishment of Civil Engineering
Scholarships. The Scholarship was $200 for an engineering
student at the University of New Brunswick. Today we award
two scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each to engineering
students at the University of New Brunswick and the Université
de Moncton.
Conditions: Awarded to a full-time
civil engineering student who has completed at least 135 credit
hours of the regular program, based on experience, need, and
an interest in road building. The award to be given to a student
who is a New Brunswick resident.
At the 2007 Annual
Meeting, the total amount of scholarships awarded since the
beginning of the program exceeded $58,000.
In 2007 two Scholarships
were presented to students from the Community Colleges in
Miramichi and Edmundston for $1,000 each..
These programs confirm
our Association’s interest in continuing education.
CHILDREN’S WISH FOUNDATION
The Annual Meeting
of January 2001 saw the beginning of a charity auction in
support of the Children’s Wish Foundation. The eight
auctions to date have provided over $150,000 to this foundation.
